about

Ancient tapes discovered under the bed in an Icelandic farmhouse reveal the progressive death-metal glory that was Morðvargar, a band apparently made up of semi-legendary, semi-historical (or both ... or neither) figures from ancient Scandinavia. The first track from these recordings that sonic archaeologists have been carefully restoring is "Þungir Straumar", which appears to have lyrics related to the well-known Old Norse poem "Vǫluspá", preserved in manuscripts that date from no earlier than the 13th century.

lyrics

Ein sat hon úti þá er inn aldni com,
yggiongr ása, oc í augo leit:
“Hvers fregnið mic? Hví freistiþ mín?
Alt veit ec, Óðinn, hvar þú auga falt!
Vildo at ec, Valfǫþr, vel fyr telia,
forn spiǫll fira, þau er fremst um man.”
Á gengoz eiðar orð oc sǿri,
mál ǫll meginlig er á meðal fóro.

Geyr Garmr miǫc fyr Gnipahelli,
festr mun slitna en freki renna.
Svart var þá sólscin of sumor eptir,
veþr ǫll válynd.
Vitoþ ér enn, eða hvat?

Sal sá hon standa sólo fiarri
Nástrǫndo á, norþr horfa dyrr.
Fello eitrdropar inn um lióra,
sá er undinn salr orma hryggiom.
Sá hon þar vaþa þunga strauma
menn meinsvara oc morð-vargar
Þar saug Niþhǫggr nái framgengna,
sleit vargr vera.
Vitoþ ér enn, eða hvat?

Geyr Garmr miǫc fyr Gnipahelli,
festr mun slitna en freki renna.
Svart var þá sólscin of sumor eptir,
veþr ǫll válynd.
Vitoþ ér enn, eða hvat?

Sceggǫld, scálmǫld, scildir ro klofnir.
Vindǫld, vargǫld, áþr verǫld steypiz.
Ormr knýr unnir, en ari hlakkar,
slítr nái niðfǫlr, Naglfar losnar.
Griótbiorg gnata en gífr rata,
troþa halir helveg, en himinn clofnar.
Sól tér sortna, sígr fold í mar.
Hverfa af himni heiðar stiǫrnor.

Geyr Garmr miǫc fyr Gnipahelli,
festr mun slitna en freki renna.
Svart var þá sólscin of sumor eptir,
veþr ǫll válynd.
Vitoþ ér enn, eða hvat?

Formed in 1971 ;) Carl grew up on a musical diet of folk, jazz, and classical music, before succumbing to the heady glories of rock-and/or-roll in a teenage daze. Thereafter, he gigged, wrote and recorded songs, and generally jammed out in various bands in the US and UK. Now based in Colombia, South America, he continues working on new music ... some of which appear here! :) ... more
